of Athens

The city is populated for the first time in Neolithic times, around 4,000 BC. Its original core is the rock of the Acropolis, which is fortified with a wall in the Mycenaean era (1600-1100 BC) and later evolved into the largest religious center of the city.

    In the years that followed, the city expanded and reached its peak in the 5th century. B.C. Philosophy, political thought leading to the birth of democracy, theater, the arts and sciences are developing equally, giving the city greatness and glamour, elements that are still alive today.

    Over the next few centuries the city passes into the power of the Macedonians and then the Romans, while the building activity continues and the city adorns temples, libraries, conservatories and galleries.

    In the 13th century A.D. Franks occupied the city, while since 1456 it is part of the Ottoman Empire. After about 400 years of Ottoman conquest, Greece became an independent state in 1830 and Athens was declared its capital in 1834.

    From a small town it evolved during the 19th and mainly the 20th century in a big city with a constant increase in its population.
